Boojum Tree

I just learned this tree which I saw in Phoenix Desert Botanical Garden was called "Boojum Tree". Its English name was taken from Lewis Carroll's poem "The Hunting of the Snark". The branches stick out of the trunk at right angles.
The plant is distinguished by a round seemingly barren stock that shoots straight into the air. it can grow to as high as 60 feet. Often, towards the top, it splits into several stems that flower at the tips. The trunk is rock hard and covered with pencil like branchlets that jut out like spikes. Often the trunk contorts and can bend over to the point of touching the ground.
